John Day has been struggling most of his life with a rare neuro-degenerative disease called Friedreich's Ataxia, or F.A. This disease threatens his life as its crippling effects deteriorate motor function by distorting messages from the brain to the rest of the body. The average life expectancy for someone with the disease is 35 years.
Currently, there is no known cure, and thus, the medical community cannot do anything for people with the disease. Because of its rarity, the pharmaceutical companies have no financial motivation to conduct (much needed) research for a cure. The medical community labels F.A. "incurable" -- but that misnomer is merely a temporary label. It is only "incurable"...until we know how to cure it.
